Are you considering adding extra space to your property but want to avoid a lengthy and costly building process? Green Abode’s eco Studio is an innovative, energy-efficient transportable home designed to give you more flexibility, comfort, and style, without the usual hassle.
What Makes the Eco Studio Transportable Home a Smart Choice?
At just 20m², the eco Studio offers a compact way to create more usable space on your property. New rules introduced in January 2026 allow certain new, standalone dwellings of up to 70m² to be built without a building consent, provided all the exemption conditions are met.
Its compact footprint can make the eco Studio easier to accommodate on smaller properties, although boundary setbacks, site coverage and other planning requirements still need to be considered.
The Government has announced that CodeMark-certified Structural Insulated Panels will be added to the granny flat building consent exemption. Until that change formally takes effect, the correct consent pathway will need to be confirmed for each Eco Studio project.
Designed using high-quality Structural Insulated Panels, the eco Studio offers excellent insulation and airtightness, helping to create a warm, energy-efficient and comfortable space.
Who Is the Eco Studio Perfect For?
The eco Studio’s versatile design makes it ideal for a wide range of needs, including:
Elderly parents or family members who want a comfortable, independent living space close to home
Homeowners seeking a quiet, dedicated home office or creative studio
Those wanting to create a stylish, self-contained Airbnb or rental unit for additional income
Anyone looking for a private retreat for hobbies, fitness, or relaxation
More Than Just a Shed: Your Home Away From Home
Unlike traditional sheds or garden buildings, the eco Studio includes a fully functional kitchenette and bathroom, making it a warm, livable home.
Important to Know About Plumbing and Consents
The Eco Studio includes a kitchenette and bathroom, so all plumbing and drainage work must comply with the New Zealand Building Code and be completed by appropriately licensed professionals.
Whether the complete project requires a building consent will depend on the exemption rules in force at the time and whether the proposed home and property meet all the relevant conditions. A Project Information Memorandum may still be required, along with planning checks and documentation from the licensed professionals involved.
At Green Abode, we can help you understand what needs to be considered for your particular property and project.
